Time of Music Summer Academy

Time of Music Festival offers in the summer 2018 interesting opportunities to study contemporary music with the world’s first and foremost composers, pedagogues and musicians. We welcome all interested music students and young professionals, both composers and musicians to deepen their knowledge of the classics of contemporary music and enhance their skills in composition and improvisation. All courses will be taught in English.

You can apply for the courses using the application form that will be published in January 15th, 2018. Attachments are listed in the application form.

OBS! You can register as an active student only for one course. Details of the courses are in course pages, links on the right.


Course fee is 250 €. The fee includes participation to one course, free public lectures and discussions, as well as free entrance to all festival concerts. The festival will not be able to give grants to cover course fees. The materials are not included to course fee.
The courses take also passive students space permitting. With the fee of 100 € passive students can listen to all courses excluding private lessons. Passive student fee doesn’t include entrances to festival concerts.

ACCOMMODATION: There is a possibility for a dormitory accommodation in double rooms for 170 € / 8 nights.

TRAVEL: Travels are not compensated. Time of Music offers a possibility to join a bus transportation between Helsinki and Viitasaari for 20 € / one way ticket. The festival will not be able to give grants to cover travel expenses.

MEALS: Meals are not compensated.

SCORES: Students of the summer academy will bring their own music sheets.

DEADLINE: Deadline for applications to composer course is midnight (UTC+2) February 16th and to improvisation course and electronics lab March 31st. More information from Artistic Director Johan Tallgren,

AUDITION: The Artistic Director of Time of Music together with the tutor of the course will decide on active participation upon the registration forms and submitted material. The results of the composer course selections will be announced latest by the 15th  of March 2018. There is no right of legal appeal. No correspondence regarding the decisions will be conducted.
