Image and space are vividly present in Time of Music’s 40th anniversary program. Titled MUNDI NOVI – NEW WORLDS, this year’s festival provides numerous international premieres and interdisciplinary art collaborations.
The opening concert of the festival presents the world premiere of Mark Applebaum’s composition Venture Capital Punishment. Known for his theatrical and crossboundary works, Applebaum’s multifaceted and one-hour long composition is performed by New York-based Talea Ensemble, who had their last visit in Time of Music in 2017. As a part of the festival’s Summer Academy, Applebaum will also be giving a master class on using choreographic elements in musical composition.
Hibernation is Sebastian Hilli’s and Jenny Jokela’s audiovisual collaboration dealing with solitude and social isolation. In this work Hilli’s compositions for a large chamber ensemble and electronics merge seamlessly together with Jokela’s dreamy pictures. Receiving its world premiere in Paris just one week before the performance in Viitasaari, Hibernation is a joint commission by Time of Music, International Ensemble Music Academy, IRCAM, and Gaudeamus Music, with support from Ulysses Network.
The complete festival program will be published by the end of May. Registration for Summer Academy courses has ended. Information on late registration for Curating Diversity and Andreas Borregaard’s Contemporary Accordeon can be inquired.
