This summer’s theme, Games of Participation, presents a series of unique concerts that are really worth experiencing. The programme includes, among other things, sound installations and interactive pieces, as well as discussions about participation. Love and artificial intelligence are also involved! The concert programme opens on Thursday 4th of July with a concert by IEMA Ensemble, which we already told about in our previous newsletter.
British composer and vocalist Laura Bowler performs her work Advert at Viitasaari Areena on Saturday 6th of July. Advert is a work that combines sound art and tattoo in a unique way. The work describes pressures of personal marketing and branding in the virtual and real life of our time. In this concert, Bowler performs together with the German contemporary music ensemble Decoder.
On Saturday 6th of July, violist Hanna Hohti and technician Anders Pohjola perform an interesting programme that relates to both reality and surrealism. Seidr by Danish composer Josefine Opsahl introduces the audience to Nordic ancient culture. Held in Viitasaari Church, the exciting concert is completed by works of Finnish Perttu Haapanen, Swedish Jesper Nordin and Norwegian Tine Surel Lange.
The final concert of this year’s festival on Sunday 7th of July presents the work Angel Death Traps by the German composer Alexander Schubert. Having visited Time of Music also before, Schubert is known specifically as a skilful user of artificial intelligence in music and installation art. In this work, artificial intelligence transforms the entirety of love songs into an intimate and objective form. The piece is performed by Time of Music’s ensemble in residence, the Finnish-Danish trio Neko3, whose members are percussionists Kalle Hakosalo and Lorenzo Colombo and keyboardist Fei Nie. Angel Death Traps will be performed at Viitasaari Areena on 7th of July at 7 p.m.
The festival also includes the previously announced concert of IEMA Ensemble on 4th of July and the premiere of the installation work Matrix of Modernity by Finnish composer Walter Sallinen and dramturg-writer Klaus Maunuksela on 5th of July. The programme also includes concerts with free admission and an interesting speach programme. The entire schedule can be found on our website at musiikinaika.org.
Contemporary Music Centre chosen as a Spearhead project in Central Finland
The Central Finland regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation has nominated City of Viitasaari’s attempt to create a year-round centre for contemporary music as one of it’s Spearhead projects of 2024. In practice the city gets a grant of 70 000 euros to establish the project which has been planned in collaboration with Viitasaaren Kesäakatemia ry, the background organization of Time of Music. At Time of Music, the new project will be handled in a conversation at Viitasaari City Hall on Tuesday 2nd of July. The conversation will be held in Finnish.
