Marcos Balter’s Pan (2019) is a music drama for solo flute and live electronics. The work tells the story of the life and death of the Greek shepherd god and demigod Pan, while exploring the identity of a being that exists in an in-between state. Pan searches for his place at the intersection of divinity, humanity, and animality. The listener is drawn into the midst of a ritual seeking understanding of existence and consciousness.
The work is performed by the internationally acclaimed flutist, teacher, and curator Claire Chase. The piece is part of Chase’s 24-year commissioning project Density 2036, which reimagines the solo flute repertoire and supports new generations of musicians.
