In the early years of the Time of Music Festival, enaissance and Baroque music was often combined in concerts with the experimental new music of our time. At one point, even Monteverdi and Bach defended their bold artistic choices through a new cartography of expression; they were the avant-gardists of their era. The German-Spanish ensemble Continuum XXI, performing on Baroque instruments, has become known for combining works from the Baroque period with new compositions. In this concert, we will hear the world premiere of Lauri Supponen’s piece southwest, written for Continuum XXI. The work is a co-commission by the Music Time Festival, the Mixtur Festival in Barcelona, and the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Music. The program also features music by several composers including Händel, Scelsi, Ligeti, Arroyo, and Monteverdi. There will be improvised sections by the performers between the works.
