The concert features two works composed for the New York-based percussion and piano quartet Yarn/Wire. In Jaime Belmonte’s work Cinq Regards sur 2024 (Five glances at 2024) the composer reflects on different perspectives of the year 2024: the climate crisis, war, a society glued to technology, the composer’s own work, and his family. Recordings from news broadcasts, home videos, phone conversations and other recordings build a bridge between each other. The composition is a co-commission by Time of Music, IRCAM (the Parisian music research institute) and Radio France.
In Alex Mincek’s work, Images of Duration, minimalism and experimentalism meet. Simply barren soundscapes, faster rhythm sections and festive atmosphere are created alongside more traditional instruments, e.g. with canisters, a white noise machine and baby monitors. Images of Duration is a homage to the American painter and sculptor Ellsworth Kelly, whose minimalist production is repeated in Mincek’s composition as timeless soundscapes.
