Time of Music 2025 packs a real landmark work into its last time capsule. The People United Will Never Be Defeated! is a musical challenge for piano composed in 1975 by Frederic Rzewski. At the same time, it is a political declaration as well as an artistic research. The monumental piece consists of 36 short variations based on the Chilean protest song ¡El Pueblo unido jamás será vencido!. Rzewski composed the work out of solidarity for the people of Chile, whose democratically elected president Salvador Allende was ousted from power in 1973. The composition is musically multi-layered, as it combines different genres from atonality to minimalism and jazz. Improvisation and graphic notation play a big role, in which case the performer’s expression has a great influence on how the piece sounds at any given time.
