Stockhausen meets Saariaho in the opening concert. The concert begins with Bach’s Chaconne which has been a reflection basis for Kaija Saariaho’s Frises for solo violin and electronics. Frises (Friezes) is performed for the first time in its entirety in Finland after the chaconne. During the second half Karlheinz Stockhausen’s overwhelming Oktophonie (1991) and Signale zur Invasion (1992) are performed simultaneously and three-dimensionally as trombonist Thomas R. Moore plays and walks a parcours amongst the audience while the walls becomes the stage for video artist Klaas van Verpoest’s liquid visuals. Both pieces are part of the second act – the cosmic battle between Michael and Lucifer – of Dienstag aus Licht, from Stockhausen’s monumental 7-day opera cycle Licht. The audience in the middle can follow the battle at the close proximity.

Artists and long-time collaborators John Butcher and Rhodri Davies have attempted to dissolve their instruments’ boundaries in many common improvisation projects. For examble, the saxophone has been used as a filter for the harp or the harp has been played by the air from the saxophone. The improvisations of the duo always resonate with the acoustics and atmosphere of the concert space. Thus, there is an idea what will happen at the Time of Music performance but the result can be only discovered at that very moment.

Karlheiz Stockhausen’s cult piece Poles – composed in Bali and premiered at Osaka EXPO70 – gets a surround treatment by Camilla Hoitenga, Taavi Kerikmäe and Tammo Sumera. By the premiere, Stockhausen had already moved forward from his intuitive music towards the mystical opera cycle Licht with synthesizers and radio frequencies. The other composers at the concert equally have their own way of communicating with the afterlife.

At the intimate concert on Thursday the duo Kumela & Lindeberg is joined by flutist Camilla Hoitenga. In Nordic pieces everyday chores, nature and birds meet with each other in miniatures also keeping in mind John Dowland – the master of lute songs and melancholy who also worked in the Nordic Countries.

Since their first duo music in 1996, Thomas Lehn and John Butcher have collaborated in numerous projects. One of the joys of duo improvisation is that its meanings are so hard to pin down. They exist in the space between distinctions. “Exuberance and Extinction” is a set of pieces concerned with the interplay between independence and interdependence, the electric and the acoustic, the physical and the cerebral gesture, habit and spontaneity, presentation and transformation, the tangible and the mysterious … ad infinitum, perhaps.

At its main concert festival presents concert for the first time in Finland French collective La Chambre aux échos’ reworking of Saariaho´s violin concerto for Graal Théâtre for violinist, actor and videos based on Aleksi Barrière’s libretto. The concert starts with a real Saariaho gem: the audience has a chance to experience for the first time since 1981 a new workshop version of Saariaho´s first piece for music theatre Study for Life based on T.S. Eliot’s iconic The Hollow Men for soprano, actor, electronics and lights, staged by Aleksi Barrière. Between the two pieces we hear the Swedish-Serbian composer Djuro Zivkovic´s ”On the Guarding of the Heart”, the Grawemeyer-prize winner 2014. Zivkovic’s recent pieces have nearly always found their inspiration from the Eastern Orthodox Church’s prominent collection of mystic texts the “Philokalia”.
