Time of Music Festival hosts a Masterclass for conductors around iconic and challenging contemporary ensemble repertoire. The tutor of the course is the Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki. Participating conductors work with an ensemble consisting of IEMA (International Ensemble Modern Academy) ensemble participants and invited Ulysses Journey musicians.
The masterclass ends in public concerts during the last days of the Festival 8th and 9th of July 2017. The course is a stop for Ulysses journeys for conductors and musicians.

Accepted students will study and rehearse all pieces during the course. Susanna Mälkki will decide during the course who will conduct which piece in concert.
Susanna Mälkki is a conductor and a cellist. She started her musical career as a cellist. She studied in Helsinki, Stockholm and London, won first prize in Turku national cello competition in 1994 and worked as a principal cellist in Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 1995-1998. Her conducting teachers in Sibelius Academy include Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam, and she graduated with a double Master´s Degree in 2000.
Susanna Mälkki has conducted the principal orchestras in both Europe and North America. From autumn 2016 Mälkki has been Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and she was recently appointed the Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, beginning in autumn 2017. Previously she held the position of Music Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain. She has conducted opera productions at Metropolitan, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra National de Paris and Helsinki National Opera to name a few.
Mälkki was elected 2010 a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and she is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2011, she was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland. In January 2016 she was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in France. In October 2016 she was named Musical America’s 2017 Conductor of the Year.
The conducting masterclass consists of daily rehearsals with the ensemble, evaluation sessions with Susanna Mälkki, lectures and public discussions.
